The madcap life of eccentric Mame
Dennis and her bohemian, intellectual arty clique is disrupted
when her deceased brother's 10-year-old son Patrick is entrusted
to her care. Rather than bow to convention, Mame introduces the
boy to her free-wheeling lifestyle, instilling in him her favorite
credo, "Life is a banquet, and most poor sons-of-bitches are
starving to death." Also figuring in the story line are
Mame's personal secretary and nanny-in-law Agnes Gooch and her
"bosom buddy" Vera Charles, the baritone actress and
world's greatest lush. Mame loses her fortune in the Wall Street
Crash of 1929 and tries her hand at a number of jobs, with
comically disastrous results, but perseveres with good humor and
an irrepressible sense of style.

Not performed in Region, sorry District
No.5 for a number of years, we really looked forward to St.
Patrick's latest production. There was a plethora of outstanding
performances throughout the talented cast. Janis Cunningham in the
title role was , in a word, superb! She was in command of the
character from start to finish. Vera Charles was played with panache
by Ann Kelly and proved to be the perfect foil for Mame. These two
were complemented by a very strong cast in which Lorraine Murphy was
a huge success as Agnes Gooch and the ever improving Matthew Coulter
(Patrick aged 19-29) showed what a fine singer and actor he has
become since joining the group. The role of Patrick Dennis (10-12)
was more than ably played by young Christopher Hastie, who appears
to have a future on the amateur stage. The experience of Joe Totten
shone through with another fine performance as Beauregard. The minor
characters were all highly convincing and with super chorus work
"Mame" was worth waiting for!
