Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera
by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Released as a double-album in
1970, it highlights the political and interpersonal struggles of
Judas Iscariot and Jesus. The action largely follows the gospels'
accounts of the last weeks of Jesus' life, beginning with Jesus
and his followers arriving in Jerusalem and ending with the
Crucifixion. Twentieth-century attitude and sensibilities as well
as contemporary slang pervade the lyrics, and ironic allusions to
modern life are scattered throughout the political depiction of
the events.
A large part of the plot focuses on
the character of Judas who is depicted as a confused, tragic
figure who is not satisfied with what he views as Jesus' lack of
planning, and alarmed by the relatively recent claims of his
divinity.

It was something of a spiritual
experience as Shotts St. Patrick's Amateur Operatic Group staged
their production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" last week.
The word "Amateur" belied the performance of this talented
group. With Superstar they broke new boundaries - and did it so
well. The show was presented in St. Patrick's Church as part of the
centenary celebrations for the building, and it was a fitting
contribution. Ross Sharkey played the demanding role of Jesus with
great passion and natural talent. Ross has a wonderful voice which
never faltered in the demanding role. He tackled the part with
apparent ease which never felt like acting, and never over-gilding
the lily. His great performance was matched by Bryan Shallow who
played Judas Iscariot. Bryan's excellent singing was well
complemented with his acting. He was more than credible with the
variety of emotions he portrayed through anger, jealousy, anguish
and remorse.... ...In truth, it was enough to be there in the great
atmosphere of an unforgettable show.

To mark the centenary of St. Patrick's
Church the group decided to stage this emotive show. What a
celebration and what a triumph! Clearly everyone involved had
"gone the extra mile" to make this a memorable experience.
Ross Sharkey was, in hi debut for the group, totally convincing in
the title role, with top quality singing and acting throughout. The
complex character of Judas Iscariot was played to perfection by
Bryan Shallow, who gave a superlative performance. These two were
supported by other outstanding principals - Anne Marie Totten (Mary
Magdalene), Joe Totten (Pontius Pilate), Brian Traynor (hilarious
King Herod) and Matthew Coulter (Peter). With a superbly drilled
chorus carrying out the advice of the production team to the letter
there was not only one but a whole galaxy of "superstars".
We were privileged to witness this outstanding production.
