The comical story is about Billy
Fisher, a working-class 19-year-old living with his parents in the
fictional town of Stradhoughton in Yorkshire. Bored by his job as
a lowly clerk for an undertaker, Billy spends his time indulging
in Walter Mitty-like fantasies and dreams of life in the big city
as a comedy writer. However, with three girlfriends on the go, his
tendency to over imagination comes at a cost. Billy is a young man
in post-war Britain who has his family’s accent and their
mannerisms. Throughout the play we see into Billy’s mind through
his fantasies. This helps us to understand why Billy makes the
decisions he does.

It is becoming a habit for St. Pat's to
produce something different and 2001 was no exception,
"Billy" being a first for Region No. 5. Everyone on stage
made a significant contribution to the show's success. Christopher
Lennon was outstanding as the dreamer, Billy Fisher. Jim McGhee gave
an admirable characterisation as Billy's Dad, and was well supported
by Mother (Ann Kelly) and Gran (Patricia McNeill). Other principals
who made an impression were David Bridges (Billy's best friend),
Maureen Barr (Liz), Frances Burt (his simpering fiancée) and
Gillian Malloch (his loud-mouthed other fiancée). The other name
principals all performed very well and were ably supported by a
talented chorus accompanied by an accomplished sextet conducted by
MD Fraser Wilson. An enthusiastic audience were fully entertained
for the duration of the piece and showed their appreciation at every
opportunity. The skilled production team - indeed everyone
associated with St. Patrick's - should feel very pleased and proud
of this latest success.
