Our group was founded in 1950 by a
supreme enthusiast, cleric, musician and persuader extraordinaire.
Father Ian McLaughlin needed all of these attributes when he
confidently declared that we could stage a Gilbert and Sullivan
operetta.
One
year later in 1951 our first production took place - a very nervy
but utterly joyous set of performances of HMS Pinafore. The show
was on the road!
From those early days the Group has
developed, progressing from Gilbert and Sullivan to Viennese
operettas to the world of musicals and musical reviews, the arena
of our current productions. Simple home made costumes and
rudimentary scenery have been superseded by professionally lined
costumes, scenery, lighting and sound equipment. Our motto
"Ore Rotundo" is Latin and means "With loud,
resounding voice".
From being a purely parochially
based organisation we have opened our doors to embrace the wider
community. Anyone can and has joined our group. We welcome
everyone irrespective of religion, race, age or disability - equal
opportunities in practice!
What has remained constant however
is a tremendous love and enthusiasm for performing on stage. We
have a well earned reputation for excellent singing - four part
singing is for this group a joy and we jealously seek to maintain
and enhance that reputation. Developing and improving the dramatic
and acting skills of our members is another priority.
Through our young, stable but
experienced production team we seek and strive to "professionalise"
our amateur productions. We see ourselves as modern, progressive
and perhaps just a little different and independent.
We think this is reflected in our
choices of show. Why not come and sample it for yourself.
